Bridging the Social Care Gap
Capability Scotland’s Dumfries & Galloway service are delighted to launch a brand new Capability Connectz project. This project will support young people, aged 16-25 with learning disabilities to develop life skills and enjoy many of the same experiences and opportunities as other young people across the region.
The project was born as a result of the cessation of a previously offered Dumfries & Galloway College course with similar aims. Our staff previously supported this college course and have witnessed first-hand the huge void this cancellation has left for young people and their families. Many concerned parents and families reached out to us for an alternative for their child and as a result, Capability Connectz was born!
Capability Scotland was presented with a cheque for £34,457 from The Holywood Trust during the recent launch event. This funding will allow us to improve our facilities and cover the staffing and other related costs of the project. We will improve our large workshop which will serve as a multi-purpose space to support young people to learn key life skills and skills for independent living, such as cooking and food prep, laundering clothes, organising and planning trips and travel, and so much more. The funding will also allow us to invest in a games room and sensory room space where young people can hang out with friends or enjoy some time out and relaxation.
We are extremely grateful to the Holywood Trust for their commitment to improving the lives of young people across the region through grant-giving. Through this project, Capability Scotland can ensure that young people with additional learning and support needs have amazing opportunities and a supported transition into young adulthood. Building a brighter future for them and their families.
