If you’re thinking about a career in social care, this free 6-week programme is designed to give you the skills, experience, and confidence to take that next step. Whether you’re brand new to the sector or looking to build on existing knowledge, you’ll get hands-on learning, one-to-one mentoring, and real-world experience to set you up for success.

Please note this programme is currently only open to residents in Dumfries & Galloway.

Programme Overview

Weeks 1 & 2 – Getting Started in Social Care

Dates: W/C 17th & 24th February 2025 (1 day per week)
Where: In-person (Dumfries) or Online (location-dependent)
What you’ll cover:

• An introduction to social care and what it’s all about
• Key values and responsibilities in the sector
• Essential skills: communication, safeguarding, person-centred care
• A first look at the safe moving and assisting of people.

Week 3 – Building Your Skills

Date: W/C 3rd March 2025 (1 day)
Where: Online or In-person
What you’ll cover:

• Disability awareness, diversity, and inclusion
• Teamwork and resilience in social care
• Managing challenging behaviour
• Care planning for complex needs

Weeks 4 & 5 – Work Experience: Learning on the Job

Dates: W/C 10th & 17th March 2025 (16 hours per week, flexible schedule)
Where: In-person (Dumfries)
What you’ll do:

• Gain hands-on experience in a real care setting
• Work alongside a Support Worker Buddy
• Put your new skills into practice and build confidence

Week 6 – Get Ready for Work

Date: W/C 24th March 2025 (1 day)
Where: Online or In-person
What you’ll cover:

• Reflecting on what you’ve learned
• CV writing and job searching strategies
• Interview skills and preparation
• A celebration to mark your achievements

No previous experience is needed—just a willingness to learn and a caring attitude.
